Abstract: We are exploring the possibility that there could be a link between having mumps as a child and having a greater degree of symmetric high frequency sensorineural hearing loss as an adult than would be expected for the patients given age. Our secondary consideration was if these same patients are pre-exposed to more hearing loss after noise exposure compared to patients who didn't have mumps.

Rationale/

Purpose: Literature has showed the link between mumps and single sided hearing loss but our sample has suggested that there is an increased chance of symmetric hearing loss later in life as well even if they didn't have the expected hearing loss as a child from contracting mumps.

Methods: The data for this qualitative descriptive retrospective cohort study has been collected through survey and test results. WE are also looking at the estimated percentage of hearing loss expected due to age using the hearing loss disability determination worksheet. Our sample size includes adults between the ages of 60-95 who had mumps as a child with and without noise exposure. We also have a control group with similar demographics who did not have mumps as a child.

Conclusions: Preliminary results suggest that there is an increased risk of having an increase in high frequency hearing loss regardless of noise exposure in those that had mumps as a child. The current results show that a future research study using a larger sample size should be completed to confirm if having mumps as a child should be considered a new red flag for patients at risk for future hearing loss.
