LM216 - Addressing Diverse Cultures in the Clinic

Abstract:
More than half of the U.S. population younger than 16 years of age is identified as racial or ethnic minority, and the 35 year projection suggests a 200% increase especially from racial or ethnic groups of two races. A professionals view of the world and tolerance of cultural diversity can impede or enhance abilities to fruitfully engage with people of other cultures.  This presentation will review some cultural traits and discuss specific scenarios that could impede success in the audiology clinic.

Summary:
Within the vast and rich tapestry of cultures an audiologist has many opportunities to enrich their own social, intellectual and economic growth to improve clinical interactions.  Culture can be reflected in social behavior, customs, habits of individuals and tolerance of differences in others. This presentation will review some of the indicators of culture that could differ from some audiologists' culture.  If not recognized, these differences could lead to unfortunate missteps and/or losing the trust of the patient. In addition to reviewing and discussion about some scenarios focused around fundamental indicators of culture as well as the concepts of cultural competence, unconscious bias, emotional intelligence, etc.  Audience reflection and participation will be encouraged.
