This is an exciting time in the development of genetic medicines for inner ear conditions, with clinical trials expected to begin soon. To identify eligible individuals for these clinical trials, genetic testing may be required, and auditory brainstem response testing may be necessary, ideally at the time of audiologic confirmation following a failed hearing screen. Audiologists play a critical role in establishing an accurate diagnosis. In addition to determining eligibility for a clinical trial, a genetic diagnosis can allow better prognostication, identify syndromic conditions, and facilitate connection of individuals and families affected by conditions that share an underlying genetic cause.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: cite the estimated overall prevalence of genetic causes of congenital hearing loss; outline the benefits of genetic testing and ABR testing for patients and families; and describe how the audiologist can support obtaining an accurate genetic diagnosis and potentially facilitate access to clinical trials for eligible participants.
