LM110 - Nothing Left to Give: Combating Employee Burnout

Abstract:
In this course, content focuses on strategies to overcome and avoid burnout. There is also an emphasis on using technology to support strategies rather than making things more difficult. An essential topic covered in this course is how to set priorities and maintain boundaries to avoid burnout successfully.

Summary:
Have you ever had a string of tough days that left you feeling burnt out? Research shows that burnout is more prevalent than ever, especially in health care. It’s important to understand what burnout is, as well as how it compares to and is related to stress in order to combat it.

This course dives into the three foundational elements of burnout: emotional and physical exhaustion, depersonalization, and low sense of personal accomplishment. Participants will also learn why burnout matters from a business sense and how to recognize it in themselves and others.

There are five common stages that we typically see burnout evolve through: the honeymoon phase, the onset of stress, chronic stress, burnout, and habitual burnout. Knowing the common internal and external causes of burnout can be helpful in avoiding getting to the stress and burnout phases.

Participants in this course will learn tools to avoid and combat burnout for themselves, as well as help create an environment where teammates can also avoid burnout. Three main steps to avoid burnout include strong mission, vision and values of a practice, regular meetings, and team building. We’ll also discuss ways to combat burnout once it’s already taken root.
