This learning lab is a hands-on crash course in the hearing conservation sub-specialty of Music Audiology. Using the framework of the AAA 2020 Clinical Consensus Document "Audiological Services for Musicians and Music Industry Personnel", the presenters will clarify best practices for the clinical care of this special population. Activities will allow attendees to practice many of the clinical skills required to effectively work with professional musicians and their specialty technology such as the verification of filtered earplugs, validation of in-ear monitors output levels, and obtaining adequate earmold impressions. This session was designed for clinicians who are looking to ensure they are following best practices when working with the musicians they already serve, and for those looking to add Music Audiology to their practice.

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply sound level measurements to estimate noise dosimetry for performing musicians or concert goers.
  • Prescribe hearing protection attenuation rating to mitigate risk for noise-induced hearing loss.
  • Evaluate the sound output of custom and non-custom in-ear monitors to estimate noise-induced hearing loss risk in the performing musician.
