Ph.D. Candidate and Pediatric Research Audiologist
Vanderbilt University: Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences
Nashville, Tennessee
Emily Thompson, a Ph.D. candidate in Vanderbilt’s Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences, currently works in the Auditory Development Laboratory at VUMC Bill Wilkerson Center, under the faculty mentorship of Dr. Anne Marie Tharpe. She previously earned degrees from the University of Connecticut (Honors B.A., 2015) and Vanderbilt School of Medicine (Au.D., 2019). The AD Lab’s ongoing studies seek to examine efficacious interventions for youth with hearing loss and autism that could provide access to high quality auditory input, enhance listening experiences, and facilitate language growth. Dr. Thompson’s recent research has utilized electrophysiological techniques and assistive technology (e.g., remote microphone systems) to investigate this intersection of auditory brain development and behavioral outcomes in children with hearing loss, neurotypical peers, and other clinical populations. Future work will continue to explore cortical auditory evoked potentials, innovative advances in pediatric amplification, and design of more effective aural rehabilitation strategies within an interdisciplinary framework.
