Rationale/
Purpose: This poster will highlight principles of interdisciplinary care and telehealth that have sustained the 9-year partnership between the College of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Cincinnati (UC) and the Palace Foundation of Mexico. The implementation of these principles will be highlighted through a case study involving an adult with chronic otitis and a longstanding history of mixed hearing loss. The disciplines involved in the audiological and medical management of the patient's chronic outer and middle ear conditions include audiology faculty and students from UC, the health team of the Palace Foundation, and local medical and laboratory professionals.
Methods: During the in-country service trips to Mexico, students are supervised by faculty and community partners. Students participate in hands-on with delivery of care to patients across the lifespan with various diagnoses such as musculoskeletal impairments, neuromuscular impairments, diabetes, obesity, and speech and hearing impairments. The UC Audiology team has also provided regular audiology follow-up via telehealth appointments for community members who have reached out to the Palace Foundation for assistance. These appointments have included the care of the patient spotlighted in the case study for this poster as well as remote fittings and adjustments of hearing aids for adults and children. These hearing aids and programming equipment have been provided through the generous donations of UC faculty and students, local audiologists, hearing aid manufacturers, and other members of the Cincinnati community. Speech-language follow-ups and home-training ideas in support of childhood language development have also been coordinated with families and community partners.
Results &
Conclusions: The impact of the audiology outreach is evident in the development of both the student clinicians and patients receiving the audiological and medical care. For the 1st and 2nd year audiology students who have participated, this unique opportunity to collaborate virtually with the Palace Foundation sustained their clinical experience during a year in which clinical practicum opportunities were significantly limited by the pandemic. For the adult audiology patients, receiving audiologic care, including hearing aids, has increased their confidence, online learning capabilities, and employment opportunities. The children who received hearing aids range in age from 18 months to 12 years, and their parents have reported improvements in speech and language development and an increase in their ability to engage in online-learning.
